Colorado Avalanche vs ST. Louis Blues - 11/6/16 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Colorado Avalanche vs ST. Louis Blues
Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 5:05pm

The St. Louis Blues look for a big home ice win on Sunday as they host the Colorado Avalanche after both teams registered a win on Saturday.

The Avalanche take to the road after an impressive 1-0 win at home against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday afternoon and after Calvin Pickard stepped in and recorded the shutout for the Avs yesterday they will go back to starter Semyon Varlamov in this one who is expected to line up against Jake Allen who was on the bench in favour of Carter Hutton yesterday. The Avs are off to sa decent start as they are 5-5 through their first 10 games and will look to turn a corner as the month of November moves along and for a group that plays in a competitive Pacific division I think they are capable of going on a run as no team right now seems to be taking the division for their own.

The Blues meanwhile are starting to roll and are off to another strong start this season and as a favourite to come out of the West again this season it should come as no surprise that they are having early season success. The win yesterday brought the Blues to 5-4-2 on the season as they recorded points in seven of 11 games so far but there is certainly room for improvement and a win at home against the Avalanche in this one would put them on track in the Central and keep them in the early running for top spot. Allen is looking to prove his worth as the team’s every day starter and a show down against Varlamov here could reassert him as the go to guy for St. Louis moving forward.

The Avs are 2-8 in their last 10 against the West and 1-4 in their last five overall while the Blues are 6-0 in their last six games of a back to back and 7-0 in their last seven Sunday games. Colorado is a good team but the Blues are a bit better and I think with both in a back to back this will come down to defense which favours the home side.

Offensive Struggles For The Avs

The Colorado Avalanche are not off to a good start to their year and they come in having lost five of their last seven (Pending Saturday). A big problem for them of late has been their offense, which has really struggled of late. In their last seven games, the Avs have been shutout three times and have averaged just 1.43 gpg over that stretch of games. That isn’t good at all. Leading Colorado in scoring this year so far has been Matt Duchene, who has five goals so far and he also leads the team in points with eight. Joe Colborne is 2nd on the team with three goals, while no one else has more than two. They will need to find more offense as the season goes on.

In their last game they fell 4-0 to Chicago and taking that loss was Semyon Varlamov, who is now 2-5 with a 3.30 GAA on the year. He will start vs Minnesota on Saturday, so getting the call here will be Calvin Pickard, who is 2-0 with a 2.49 GAA on the year. Pickard is 0-1 with a 2.40 GAA in two career games vs the Blues. Colorado enters this game ranked 27th in the league in scoring at 2.22 gpg, while also ranking 17th in shots taken (29.3 spg) and 15th in power play conversions, converting on 19.4% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice they have not been good at all as they come in ranked 25th in goals allowed, giving up 3.11 gpg, while also ranking 13th in shots allowed (29.8) and 22nd in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 21.6% of their chances.
