PSV have started the new season well, despite the annual exodus of top players from the Eredivisie. They have lost the likes of Jeffrey Bruma, Adam Maher and Marco van Ginkel this summer and brought in playmaker Barc Ramselaar for £5 million and Siem de Jong and Oleksandr Zinchenko on loan from Newcastle and Manchester City respectively.
Their season began well as they beat Feyenoord 1-0 in the Dutch Super Cup, and they have followed this with four wins and one draw in the Eredivisie, to put the defending champions 2nd in the table behind the perfect record of Feyenoord.
However, the Champions League is a different beast entirely. They have been drawn in a tough group including the dominant German giants Bayern Munich and last year’s finalists Atletico Madrid. They’ll need to rely on a home result against at least one of these teams to give themselves a realistic chance of qualifying from the group.
Atletico Madrid will be a team possessed though. Diego Simeone has led his team to two Champions League finals in the last three seasons. Both times have seen them hold Real Madrid after 90 minutes, only for them to lose on penalties or after extra time. Simeone will now be hoping it’s 3rd time lucky for him and his team, but first they have to navigate a difficult group stage.
They’ve made some big moves in the transfer market this season, letting the likes of Borja Baston and Joshua Guilavogui go and Luciano Vietto leave on loan. Kevin Gameiro has come in as an out and out striker for them and Nico Gaitan and Sime Vrsaljko have bolstered the squad as well. The biggest success is them convincing Antoine Griezmann to sign a new contract though.
This didn’t help when they hosted Alaves in their La Liga opener in August though. They were held by them for 93 minutes until Gameiro slotted a penalty away. This sent the players into celebrations, but in the 95th minute they conceded to drop two points against the underdogs. Although, after Alaves beat Barcelona at the Camp Nou this weekend, this draw doesn’t seem quite so humiliating.
They followed this up with another draw away to Leganes before finally getting their first win of the season in a 4-0 thrashing of Celta Vigo away from home on Saturday.
Atletico Madrid may be specialists of the aggregate win in the Champions League, but away from home they aren’t the best. They have only won two of their last ten away days in the Champions League, whilst PSV are unbeaten in their last six at home in the Champions League. This includes their draw with Atletico Madrid in February and also results against Wolfsburg, AC Mila and Manchester United.
The hosts definitely have a chance of getting something on Tuesday, and odds of 10/11 for a PSV Win or Draw Double Chance look excellent value. I’m going for a 1-1 correct score prediction at 11/2 as well.
