After beating Juventus in the Derby d’Italia last month, things appeared to be looking up for Inter. Then things took a sour turn in the span of just a week. First was a surprise 3-1 loss to Czech champions Viktoria Plzen in Europa League action. Frank de Boer attempted to rotate his squad with one eye on the team’s must-win clash against Roma that was coming up in a few days’ time.
Unfortunately, that gamble backfired, too, as Inter lost that match 2-1. Two losses in two games now have seen the pressure back on his shoulders. The constant over-reliance on Captain Mauro Icardi for goals is also a major source of concern, and fans will be hoping to see players like Ever Banega – who netted his first goal for his new club in the loss to Roma – Antonio Candreva, and Ivan Perisic provide the much-needed support for the Argentinian attacker.
In addition, Croatian international Marcelo Brozovic could see himself reinstated after his tantrum forced him to be excluded from the team for their past few matches. The Nerazzurri have a tough Europa League game against Southampton coming up, and it goes without saying that it’s going to be all or nothing. As such, de Boer will need his side to get up and running by picking up a win here before welcoming their tricky English opponents in a few days’ time.
Fortunately for Inter, Cagliari have been very poor on the road. Not only have they lost their last three home games, but also they have conceded nine during that run. However, they are just one point behind their upcoming opponents, and have scored in all but one of their seven Serie A ties this season.
Furthermore, the Rossoblu are on a two-match winning streak, and overall have won three out of their last four games. Can they take advantage of Inter’s struggles to finally pick up their first away win of the season?
